Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why Should I have my vehicle and caravan weighed?

Knowing your actual vehicle and caravan weights helps you understand whether you are travelling within the manufacturer’s specified limits.

Many owners know their GVM, ATM or towing capacity, but don’t know what their vehicle actually weighs when loaded for a trip. Your Weigh measures the relevant weights and explains the results in plain English, helping you make informed loading decisions and travel with greater peace of mind.

2. What does Your Weigh actually weigh?

  • Car
  • 4WD
  • Caravan
  • Trailer

3. Can you weigh my car and caravan together

Yes.

That’s the advantage of Your Weigh.

Rather than you having to take your vehicle or caravan somewhere, we come to you where practical.

Our mobile service is designed to make vehicle weighing convenient and accessible, with weighing carried out on a solid, flat and level surface to obtain the best reading.

4. What is the difference between weighing my caravan and weighing the combination.

Weighing the caravan provides important information about the caravan’s actual weight and loading.

Weighing the complete combination allows us to look at the relationship between your tow vehicle and caravan, including the loads being placed on the vehicle and trailer.

For people preparing for extended travel, we recommend considering a complete vehicle and caravan/trailer assessment so you have a clearer picture of how your combination is loaded.

5. What are GVM, ATM, GTM and GCM?

These are different weight limits that apply to vehicles and towing combinations.

GVM – Gross Vehicle Mass: the maximum permitted loaded mass of the tow vehicle.

ATM – Aggregate Trailer Mass: the maximum permitted loaded mass of a trailer or caravan when it is not connected to the tow vehicle.

GTM – Gross Trailer Mass: the mass carried by the trailer’s wheels when it is connected to the tow vehicle.

GCM – Gross Combination Mass: the maximum permitted mass of the tow vehicle and trailer combination.

There are also axle, tyre, towbar, coupling and other manufacturer-specified limits that need to be considered.

Your Weigh doesn’t just give you a number on a set of scales. We explain what the numbers mean for your particular vehicle and combination.

6. Can I just use a public weighbridge?

A public weighbridge can provide useful weight information, but understanding your vehicle and caravan combination can involve more than simply obtaining one total weight.

Your Weigh provides a mobile service specifically focused on vehicle and trailer weighing. We measure the relevant loads and then take the time to explain the results with you.

You receive a detailed two-page report that you can keep for future reference. (Your Weigh Mobile Vehicle)

7. What happens during a Your Weigh appointment

The process is straightforward.

  1. We weigh your vehicle or combination.
  2. We record the relevant individual weights.
  3. We compare the results with the applicable limits.
  4. We prepare your two-page report.
  5. We explain the report with you.
  6. We discuss any areas that may need attention, including loading and weight distribution.

Our aim is for you to leave understanding your weights rather than simply being handed a piece of paper.

8. Do I need to empty my caravan before it is weighed?

No. In fact, it is generally useful to weigh your caravan in the condition in which you normally travel.

If you are preparing for a trip, bring the equipment, food, water and other items you would normally carry.

Your actual travelling weight is what matters when you are trying to understand how your caravan and vehicle are loaded.

9. When should I get my caravan or vehicle weighed?

There are several good times to have your weights checked:

  • Before your first major caravan trip
  • Before travelling around Australia
  • After purchasing a new caravan
  • After upgrading your tow vehicle
  • After adding accessories or modifications
  • After changing your normal load
  • Before a long trip
  • If you are unsure whether you are within your limits

It is also worth having your weights checked again if your vehicle or caravan setup changes.

10. What if I find out that I am overloaded?

Finding out before you travel gives you the opportunity to do something about it.

Your Weigh will explain the results with you and identify areas that may require attention. Sometimes the solution may involve changing what you carry, reducing unnecessary items or redistributing your load.

The important thing is knowing your actual weights so you can make informed decisions before you travel.

11. Does weight distribution really matter?

Yes.

It is not only the overall weight of your vehicle or caravan that matters. Where the weight is positioned can also affect individual axle loads and the way your vehicle and caravan behave on the road.

Your Weigh can help you understand the results and discuss loading and weight distribution as part of your assessment.

12. Will I receive a report?

Yes.

Your Weigh provides a two-page report showing your measured weights and relevant information.

We then take the time to go through the report with you and explain the results and recommendations.

Our customers often tell us that the explanation is one of the most valuable parts of the service. (Your Weigh Mobile Vehicle Weighing – reviews)
